Modern turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection – petrol TSI units – deliver lower fuel consumption and emissions without forfeiting dynamic handling.
Direct fuel injection turbocharged engines have a flat torque curve over a wide rpm range. The turbocharging gives them ample power at low rpm, i.e. the level at which the engine is running for most of the time. In the lower rpm range, the engine is also quieter and features lower fuel consumption and emissions.
When a vehicle is stationary, the engine continues to consume fuel and emit pollutants without delivering any benefits at all. This is where the Start-Stop system comes in, automatically switching the engine off when the car is at standstill, thereby instantly reducing fuel consumption.
The system does not require any input from the driver and does not inhibit driving comfort because there is no delay or juddering when the time comes to move off again. The Start-Stop system is activated automatically after the engine starts.
During braking, the kinetic energy is transformed into heat, which is then uselessly radiated into the environment. To help you get part of this energy back, we’ve developed the brake energy recovery system, which uses an intelligent alternator to store the energy in the battery during deceleration and then uses it to lower the engine load by the alternator, reducing fuel consumption.
The right choice of gear ratio can save fuel and increase driving comfort at the same time. Lower engine speeds result in lower fuel consumption and quieter engine operation.
The gear change recommendation is presented on the display in the instrument cluster. The symbol in the upper right corner of the display confirms the right choice of gear ratio, or recommends changing it up or down.
